Innovative GPS Solution Benefits DSNY and New Yorkers

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has opted for Magellan’s Return to Route solution to efficiently manage its fleet of salt spreading vehicles across all five boroughs – Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island. Being the first urban fleet to implement the Magellan system, DSNY has already started piloting it in the cabs of its 700 large and small salt spreaders. The deployment is expected to have a significant impact on safety and productivity during the upcoming snow season.

According to Chief Shari Pardini of DSNY, their drivers work on the front lines of fighting winter storms, often encountering challenging white-out conditions. By installing Magellan’s solution in the cabs of their salt spreaders, DSNY is giving their sanitation personnel with a strong new technology tool for navigating through adverse road conditions. With turn-by-turn directions now readily available, drivers can efficiently and safely salt and plow roads, ensuring prompt clearance during harsh winter weather.

DSNY Selects Magellan Route

According to Pardini, this decision is primarily about ensuring the safety of their drivers and the well-being of New Yorkers. The Magellan solution was chosen because it was the only software available that could meet their specific requirements. With the combined efforts of DSNY’s Operations Management Division, Bureau of Motor Equipment, and Magellan, they have successfully loaded 1,400 custom routes into the system and can now provide turn-by-turn directions directly from the taxi. This streamlined approach will enhance efficiency, improve driver safety, and ultimately benefit the citizens of New York.

Magellan’s Return to Route solution ensures that no part of the assigned course is missed by the salt spreading equipment. If a driver deviates from the course, the onboard system immediately detects the deviation and reroutes the vehicle in real-time, ensuring that it completes its task efficiently and effectively, leaving no avenue missed. This streamlined approach improves overall productivity, reduces the risk of errors, and ensures that New Yorkers can safely navigate the winter streets.

Mark Perini, Vice President of Fleet Solutions at Magellan, commended DSNY for being an ideal partner in creating an advanced GPS Return to Route solution that effectively caters to the complex geography of all five boroughs of New York City. Perini praised DSNY’s vision for technology and their commitment to excellence, which drove their need for a solution that could accommodate a vast library of custom maps and an embedded device to enable their fleet of experienced drivers to navigate through the city with ease, even in the most extreme weather conditions. Return to Route was specifically designed to handle such situations, and Magellan looks forward to witnessing the impact it will have on DSNY’s performance this snow season.
